Ebook About
In the space of a few days, Carrie loses her marriage, her career, and her home—all while working in Lagos, Nigeria. She is blindsided by the losses and realizes the story she painstakingly knit together over the past two decades—the story explaining her life and who she is—has unraveled. With no plan for the future and only her deaf cat, Lucy, for company, Carrie decides to remain in Africa until she figures out what has just happened. What happens next is an awkward, amusing, and ultimately inspiring journey as Carrie slowly lets go of who she thought she was and starts from scratch at middle-age: making unlikely friends, acquiring dump trucks, tumbling into an improbable love affair, and eventually learning to listen to the elusive and sometimes annoying voice helping her discover who she is, find the neglected artist inside, and piece together her unexpected new life.

Book Blue Yarn: A Memoir About Loss, Letting Go, and What Happens Next Review :

Carrie Classon's debut memoir, *Blue Yarn*, is exactly what it claims to be: an insightful and adventurous yarn that starts out on a sad note and leaves you blue when it ends. Rendered in graceful prose with a tongue-in-cheek sense of humor, the book recounts how the sudden and unexpected loss of the author's job and marriage left her stranded in Nigeria, sorting through the rubble of her former life while trying to make sense of how it all happened and, as the subtitle claims, what happens next.As other reviewers have noted, the book doubles as a really effective travel brochure for destinations all over Africa: I found myself pulling up YouTube videos of African jazz singers as I read Wikipedia pages on everything from music festivals to regional cuisine to boat construction to colonial history. Maybe there's a soundtrack deal to be made? Either way, I loved all of these Easter eggs, which made the book that much more enjoyable even as it significantly lengthened the list of places I'd like to visit someday. If this description appeals to you, then you are likely the sort of person who will enjoy the book as much as I did. The situation, to borrow Vivian Gornick's useful distinction, is compelling. The story itself is uplifting and inspiring. I have already recommended the book to many people, and I wholeheartedly endorse it here, too.I wouldn't recommend *Blue Yarn* to everyone -- people who don't speak English, for example -- but I feel compelled here to address the naysayers. The power of memoir lies in the access it grants us to emotions we haven't felt, experiences we haven't had, lives we haven't lived. In that light, I have to confess I laughed when I read some of the other reviews on this page. One reviewer justifies her decision to award three stars by saying she genuinely enjoyed the book but disagreed with some of the author's decisions. That's like giving a mediocre review to *Titanic* after seeing it ten times because you think it was rash of Leonardo DiCaprio's character to stake his life savings on a hand of poker. It's totally beside the point. If you would have made the same decisions, then the story would be less powerful for you anyway because you've probably already had similar experiences. Memoirists don't claim they have made no mistakes in their lives -- we all make mistakes, so making that claim would only mark the writer as untrustworthy. Instead, memoirists write to make sense of their lives, and to share some of their hard-won understanding with us.In *Blue Yarn*, the author does the hard (and brave) work of laying herself bare on the page. Reviews are not intended as referenda on the events of the story, but rather on the quality of the storytelling. This is a great one. I was sorry when it ended, and while I eagerly await the author's next book, I console myself by reading her weekly newspaper column, The Postscript, written in the same inimitable voice and chronicling life in Los Alamos, New Mexico. If you liked the memoir, then I highly recommend the column, too.
I made the mistake of not sitting down after I opened the package that the book was in- I received it in the mail when I got home from work last night, and before I fed the dog or started my dinner or took off my shoes, I was deeply involved. So I haven't read the whole thing yet, but I know I'm going to really love it- and I'm grateful for a late spring storm that will afford me some reading time this weekend! Way to go Carrie!
